San Miguel San Fernando Brewery community Clinic Soon To Rise

Last June, San Miguel San Fernando Brewery held a groundbreaking ceremony for their community clinic in San Fernando, Pampanga. Led by San Miguel Brewery, Inc. President Roberto N. Huang, the ceremony was also attended by Ramon A. Santiago, vice-president for Corporate Affairs of San Miguel Corporation and chairman of the Board of Trustees of San Miguel Foundation Inc., Roberto de Leon plant manager of San Miguel San Fernando Brewery, Camille Buenaventura, executive director of San Miguel Foundation and Dr. Eloisa Aquino, head of the Municipal Health Office of San Fernando, Pampanga.

The Gift of Health

The gift of health has always been an opportunity of San Miguel Brewery’s corporate social responsibility program. Medical and dental missions have comprised a good part of their yearly social services offered to their host communities nationwide. Building on this commitment, SMB launched its community clinic project. Much like the medical and dental missions of San Miguel Brewery, the community clinic provides qualified beneficiaries free medical consultation and medicines for diseases that require ling term attention or supervision. Unlike the missions, the community operates year-round.

With the first clinic established in Valenzuela, San Miguel Brewery saw the working model of the community clinic as a blueprint that can be replicated in other areas; hence the second community clinic was built in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur. To date, both community clinics have served more than 11,000 individuals.

For the fourth time (Monterey put up a similar clinic in Sumilao), the community clinic is being replicated to serve the communities is San Miguel San Fernando Brewery in Pampanga namely Barangays Quebiawan, Maimpis and San Isidro.

The Working Blueprint

The blueprint of the community clinic is a simple yet effective design. All community clinics function in coordination with the local barangay particularly with the barangay health officer. The health officer is responsible for certifying would-be patients as indigent and requires long term medication and monitoring. Many of the patients suffer from cardio-vascular, pulmonary and age-related diseases such as hypertension and high blood pressure. The clinic also accommodates patients for minor emergencies and common diseases if the barangay health center is too far for the patient to visit, as in the case in Davao del Sur.

The “soon to rise” community clinic will be a fully operational clinic complete with triage, waiting area, consultation room, observation and treatment area, comfort room, and a nurse’s station.

Records of the patients will be kept in the clinic and are available to the local health officer upon request. All operational costs of the community clinic such as salaries, utilities and medicines will be shouldered by San Miguel San Fernando Brewery. The San San Miguel San Fernando Brewery Community Clinic is expected to be completed and fully operational by August 2010. In addition to the clinic, San Miguel San Fernando Brewery also implements other social programs for its host communities such as supplemental feeding, medical missions, scholarships, livelihood, and barangay strengthening programs.
