Metrobank Foundation, Inc.

Program Coordinator

Maco was born in Lamitan City, Basilan Province in 1988. As young as 6 years old, he became active in the Catholic Church to strengthen his faith. To further comprehend the inter-faith issues of peace and order, he went out of his way to understand the Islam religion. This continued until he reached high school and became one of the most dynamic youth leaders in the municipality participating in local, national and international programs not just towards peace, but also in leadership and civic community.

Maco in his own simple yet meaningful ways continues to spread love and peace through volunteerism. He also initiated and supported activities for other youth to develop and inculcate in them the passion for peace in Mindanao and to unleash their leadership potential and call for service. He once wrote, “A place of understanding and dialogue is what I dream of especially here in Mindanao and my hometown Basilan. I am a peace advocate by nature and by nurture. And I’ll fight for peace and understanding, with dialogue as my firearm. I believe that peace is not impossible if together we will make it possible.”

Maco runs his own volunteer organization named, “I am M.A.D. (Making A Difference)” which he co-founded with another volunteer named Christian Marx Rivero. From two volunteers, I am MAD has grown into a volunteer program for youth reaching areas up north in Luzon up to the southern part of the Philippines. I am MAD has now 264 volunteers and has reached 31 areas. The organization was able to raise almost P1.3 million pesos worth of donations since it was established in 2009.

I am MAD is Maco’s proof that anyone can have a personal advocacy where even if they are busy with their professional lives they can still volunteer. Despite the challenges and consequences the volunteers of I am MAD have faced in identifying the areas, recruiting more volunteers, looking for funds, attending to their careers, and coping with some personal issues with their individual families, among others, they have still continued to spread their passion in making a difference.

I am MAD is already SEC registered and recently awarded in Malacañang as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations given by the TAYO Foundation Inc. (The Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations Awards Foundation Incorporated) together with its partners, the National Youth Commission, Office of Senator Bam Aquino and Coca-Cola Foundation. In addition, Maco has also received volunteerism recognitions and awards from the following: Outstanding Volunteer during the 2013 Search for Outstanding Volunteer by the Philippine National Volunteer Coordinating Agency, City Mayor Award of Zamboanga City, Outstanding Lamiteño Award of Lamitan City, Search for Ulirang Mandaleño of Mandaluyong City Award, Advocate of the Year Award by the Global Youth Day 2014, 2011 Five Outstanding Zamboangeño Youth Leader (FOZYL) Awardee of JCI International, United Nations Association of the Philippines Outstanding Youth Leader Award under the Community Service Category, the 2009 Young Peace Weaver Award by Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace and the Youth Leadership Excellence Award of Senator Chiz Escudero.

I am M.A.D. is Maco’s most significant contribution to the country. He believes that in volunteering, you actually gain more than what you give – and these gains are immeasurable and boundless. The continued implementation of I am M.A.D until today shows the impact of volunteerism in his life.

Maco is currently working fulltime as Program Coordinator at the Metrobank Foundation. Metrobank Foundation has supported Maco’s outreach programs all the way.
