LCF Inducts New Members

The League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) celebrated the Christmas Season with an induction of new members: Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. Foundation (HARI Foundation), Liberty Commercial Center Foundation (LCC Foundation), and the Philippine Airlines Foundation (PAL Foundation) (PAL Foundation rejoins the League after two years’ hiatus).

Representing HARI Foundation was their President and CEO Ms. Fe Perez-Agudo, First Assistant Executive Director Marissa Balmaceda, and Second Assistant Executive Director Atty. Lorna Veloso.

Coming all the way from Bicol, LCC Foundation was represented by their Chair Mr. Antonio S. Tan, Executive Director Guada Espinas, and Program Office Eugene Sangil.

PAL Foundation was represented by their Executive Director Menchu Sarmiento and Candie Zapanta.

Following the induction was a presentation of U-Share by LCF Member Unionbank. To cap of the afternoon, a Christmas Party themed “Everyone is a Hero” saw guests attired as super heroes from various genres.

LCF Enterprise Development Committee holds "Tara, Magbenta Na!"


Budding entrepreneurs from various communities supported by LCF members gathered last 18 October 2012 at the Laurel Mansions to improve their product development skills from industry experts.

The LCF Enterprise Development committee (EntrepCom) held "Tara, Magbenta Na!" (translation "Come on, Let' Sell!") a learning session on product development and merchandiser interaction. The activity is the second stage in a series of business development learning events spearheaded by the committee.

The event opened with a warm welcome from Villar Foundation Executive Director Atty. Rhaegee Tamana, who sponsored the event venue and logistics. EntrepCom Chair Theresa Tumbali (of UCPB-CIIF Foundation) provided an overview of the whole day's program. To inspire the participants, success stories were shared by parol-making and environment-managing communities supported by the Villar Foundation.

The delegates cut their teeth on the many trends, requirements, and best practices provided by speakers invited by the EntrepCom:

  • Trends and Opportunities in Product Development - Mr. Rey Luciano Soliven (Consultant, Product Development & Design Center of the Philippines)
  • Packaging: How Important Is It? - Ms. Ana Maria Veronica Solano (Consultant, Product Development & Design Center of the Philippines)
  • How to be a Supplier - Mr. Steven Cua (President, Philippine Amalgamated Supermarket Association); Ms. Annabel Quiogue (Kultura, Shoemart, Inc.); Ms. Ana Serrano (Asst. Vice President, Supermarket Non-Food Division, Shoemart Inc.); Ms. Leah Lee (Asst. Vice President, Supermarket Fresh Division, Shoemart Inc.)
  • Jocelyn Uy (SM Savemore, Shoemart Inc.)

Cua, Quioge, Serrano, Lee, and Uy answered questions from the audience in an open forum. Most questions concerned the struggles faced by small entrpreneurs in penetrating mainstream merchandisers. 

A product critiquing activity was held to encourage a real-time consultation. The participants brought their merchandise for inspection and advice of the speakers.

Raffled off throughout the day where prize items brought by the EntrepCom members. The day was synthesized by committee vice-chair Ken Reston (of San Miguel Foundation) and was closed by LCF Advisory Council Member Lydia Sarmiento.

Teachers Consulted on Social Responsibility and Good Governance

A total of 39 college professors and instructors from 15 colleges and universities in Metro Manila and Batangas attended the whole day Consultative Workshop on Social Responsibility and Governance held on September 24 at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB) Amphitheatre.

Organized by the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF), AGSB, Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), and the Philippine Council of Deans and Educators for Business (PCDEB), the workshop aimed at: 

  • Reviewing the provisions of CHED Memorandum Order 39 Series of 2006, as well as possible revisions to the Memo that are presently being considered;
  • Review of the syllabus on Social Responsibility and Governance that was developed by LCF in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the PCDEB, with inputs from the Governance Committee of MAP; and
  • Presenting teaching strategies as well as instructional materials that are available to enhance the teaching of Social Responsibility and Governance, including cases, reference materials, and resource persons and organizations. 

The workshop programme consisted of lectures in the morning session and break-out sessions in the afternoon, where the faculty members participated in a moderated discussion of syllabus content, teaching strategies, and instructional/ reference materials on Social Responsibility and Governance.

The teacher-participants were welcomed by Dean Albert Buenviaje of AGSB and Ms. Lydia Enrile, member of the LCF Advisory Council and Chair of the CSR Committee of MAP. Dr. Catherine Castañeda, Director IV of CHED-NCR gave the teachers updates from the Commission on Higher Education. Mr. Rex Drilon, President of The Institute of Corporate Directors, briefed the teachers on Good Governance while Ms. Marilou Erni, General Manager of Petron Foundation talked about Corporate Social Responsibility. Dean Conrad Iñigo, Chair of the CHED Technical Committee for Business Administration, updated the teachers on the proposed latest revisions to CHED Memo 39-2006. Teacher-participants expressed the need for more workshops in the other regions and for more materials such as videos, field visits, local reference materials, and link up with industry.

During the workshop break-out sessions, the teachers came up with their own ideas on improving the syllabus, and shared their own teaching strategies and resource materials in teaching Social Responsibility and Governance. The breakout sessions were moderated by Dr. Virginia Rosas of Letran and PCDEB, Dr. Carolina Guina of AGSB, and Mr. John Michael Olaco of the Far Eastern University. Ms. Pamela Castro of Pilipinas Shell Foundation and Mr. Chito Maniago of CEMEX Philippines also served as moderators.

To end, Dr. Benito Teehankee, Chair and Associate Professor of De La Salle University’s Management and Organization Department, gave an inspiring speech to the teachers, reminding them of their critical role in nation-building.

Providing much-needed support to the workshop are the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, the Management Association of the Philippines, and the Bato-Balani Foundation, Inc.

LCF Begins the “LCF Forest”

Eighty-two environment enthusiasts joined the tree planting activity of the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) on September 22 at Ipo Watershed, Norzagaray, Bulacan. As promised in its LCF CSR Expo last July 2012, six hundred sixteen seedlings were planted for the same number of delegates who participated in the two-day conference and exhibit. 

LCF, led by its Environment Committee, partnered with the Manila Water Company (MWC) and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) in choosing the three-hectare planting site, dubbed the “LCF Forest”. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed by the three organizations last 15 August 2012. 

The half-day tree planting activity received enthusiastic volunteers from BPI Foundation, Energy Development Corporation, Lopez Group Foundation, Philam Foundation, TeamAsia, Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, UCPB-CIIF Foundation, and the League of Corporate Foundations. 

LCF Trustee Ms. Monette Hamlin welcomed the volunteers and explained that the LCF Forest will be planted with indigenous seedlings of kupang (Parkia Timoriana) and narra (Pterocarpus indicus) within three years. MWC and MWSS, as LCF’s partners, will monitor the site’s growth.

LCF Holds CSR 101 for New Members



The League of Corporate Foundations gave an introductory course on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to its new members last 22 August 2012. The activity was attended by seven participants from AES Philippines Power Foundation, AMY Foundation, Kraft Foods Philippines, ICCP Group Foundation, and San Roque Power Foundation. 

A member of the Speakers’ Bureau, Ms. Techu Tumbali of UCPB-CIIF Foundation, was invited to give various perspectives of CSR – historical, social, and economical. Participants also gained practical knowledge from the experiences of Manila Doctors Hospital, represented by its CSR Director, Ms. Jennifer Laxamana.
