‘ASEAN CSR Network’ launched in Manila

Private sector group aims to promote and improve the practice of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Southeast Asian region

(Makati City, Philippines) – Initiated by the ASEAN Foundation, a regional body has been formed to spearhead the promotion of the practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Southeast Asia. The ‘ASEAN CSR Network’ aims to pave the way for increased cooperation among ASEAN stakeholders in the area of CSR.

Founding members of the network include the Indonesia Business Links, International Chamber of Commerce-Malaysia, League of Corporate Foundations (Philippines), and the Singapore Compact for CSR, which will be hosting the network’s secretariat in Singapore. CSR networks, business groups and chambers of commerce in all ASEAN countries are also being engaged to gather more support for CSR in the region. Participants to the Manila launching of the network include representatives from the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Stock Exchange of Thailand, Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce.

After preliminary work done by the Asian Institute of Management to survey and identify CSR stakeholders in the region, the League of Corporate Foundations was tapped by the ASEAN Foundation to lay the groundwork for the formation of the network by organizing consultations meetings and drafting the framework for the network, which was adopted by the founding members last March in a meeting in Singapore. The project received financial support from the ASEAN-Japan Solidarity Fund and the People’s Republic of China.

Launched in conjunction with the LCF CSR Expo 2010, Dr. Filemon Uriarte, Jr., Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation joined officers from the founding members and other ASEAN representatives to officially launch the network. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to express the commitment of the founding members, with other stakeholders expected to formalize their participation in the network soon. Ms. Erna Witoelar, Chair of the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium gave the keynote speech.
