Batch Two of Superintendents’ Leadership Program, Formally Launched

The opening ceremony and gala dinner for the launch of the Superintendents’ Leadership Program (SLP) last August 14 at the Eugenio Lopez Center in Antipolo offered a perfect opportunity to acclaim the superintendents’ achievements and appreciate the commitment of the organizations behind the program in raising the standards of education in the country.

The organizations that continuously strive to train education leaders to achieve excellence are Department of Education (DepEd), De La Salle University (DLSU), Australian Aid (AusAid), Lopez Group Foundation Inc. (LGFI), and Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI).

Ms. Rina Lopez Bautista, President and Executive Director of KCFI welcomed the guests into their “family’s home”, the Eugenio Lopez Training Center. “We also welcome you to continue the journey with us as we strive to provide our children and all other learners, an education that will not only be relevant in an increasingly borderless world but an education that is thoughtful, soulful and timeless”, she said.

The Batch Two superintendents-participants offered their rendition of Tyler Collins’ ‘Thanks to You’ to the men and women who organized and funded the SLP. Together with heads of DepEd, DLSU, AusAid, Lopez Group of Companies, KCFI, and regional leaders, the participants signed in the commitment wall to signify their pledge to be “a 21st century leader, catalyzing and inspiring transformation in Philippine education”.

In his inspirational message, Dr. Oscar M. Lopez recognized the very important positions that the participants hold. He said, “We believe, as Bro. Armin believes, that you are the change agents who will guide and inspire this program to success, much like exceptional chief executive officers who guide large conglomerates… You are the division chief executives. People look to you for direction. People look to you for leadership”.

DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro formally closed the program with a brief message. He left these moving words to the participants and guests: “We did not want to start a program that will only cover a handful. It has to be every single one of us in the field, on the same page… And as you begin your journey, you have to be ready to also die. To die to the old self and believe that there is a resurrection. We are not looking for saints; we are looking for heroes to admit their mistakes and are willing to learn again. Tonight we start that long journey.”

Br. Ricky Laguda, President and Chancellor of DLSU and Ms. Elaine Ward, Counselor of AusAid, also expressed their support through a speech. “This leadership program will let you perform miracles and touch the hearts of many. You will not only start a revolution but you will also perform miracles,” said Bro. Ricky Laguda. Ms. Ward expressed how proud Australia is to be a part of the SLP. “We are honored to join this awesome campaign. Australia welcomed this opportunity to be able to support this program because it responds to promoting and ensuring sustainability of educational transformation,” Ward said.

Regional leaders from all over the country also attended the event. Before-dinner entertainment was provided by singer-songwriter Noel Cabangon. The masters of the ceremony were Epy Quizon and Ms. Marilou Tioseco, Senior Manager for Resource Mobilization of KCFI.

SLP is designed to assist education leaders in adapting to major changes in the landscape of Philippine education especially with the advent of K-12, learner-centered learning, school-based management and 21st century education imperatives. The participants earn a doctorate degree from De La Salle University upon finishing the program.
