DepEd, CLFI inaugurate ALS Learning Centers in Cavite and Laguna

As series of DepEd-Cebuana Lhuillier Alternative Learning System (ALS) Community Learning Center (CLC) launches took place nationwide, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI) encountered different learners and realized – age doesn’t matter.

Antonio Abeledo, 59, a garbage collector and a DepEd-Cebuana Lhuillier learner, was determined to be a secondary degree holder via ALS despite his age.

Efigenia Tadefa, 56 (left), and Antonio Abeledo, 59 (right), are two of the oldest DepEd Cebuana Lhuillier ALS learners. Despite their advanced age, they availed free education to support their families.

“Maganda ang may pinag-aralan. Noong kabataan ko, nabarkada ako… Nakilala ko si Mr. Anquilan (ALS mobile teacher), pinakilala niya ang ALS… Ginusto kong umangat sa kahirapan… Inspirasyon ko ang anak ko.”

The 12 year old girl Jemimah Leyva was one of the youngest in her group. She finished only second grade but with ALS, she can fulfill her dream to reach high school and be a nurse someday.

Abeledo and Leyva were just two of the 117 ALS learners of the CLC inaugurated last September 12, the Rosario Elementary School in Cavite. Said school received a desktop computer, printer and projector with screen.

CLFI Executive Director Atty. Cesar Vidal, Region III Regional Manager Mr. Rolando Dario, Department Manager Ms. Pebbles Muñiz, Area Managers Mr. Leo Marcos Peren and Mrs. Susan Anadon conveyed Dr. Jean Henri Lhuillier’s message to the learners – “ALS. Always Love Schooling.”

School officials became very grateful to Cebuana Lhuillier. Mrs. Catalina Pasicolan, Guidance Counselor; Mr. Sonny Mercado, SB Secretary; Dr. Carmencita Tosco, OIC ALS Supervisor; Ms. Diane Topacio, District Supervisor and Mrs. Edna Pangilinan, ALS Coordinator inspired the learners towards positive attitude and proper education.

Meanwhile, a full-force launching program occurred last August 19 at F. Benitez Memorial Elementary School, few minutes away from one of the chosen CLC, Pagsanjan Mobile Library in Laguna.

Said event was graced by the former Laguna governor himself, ER Ejercito, with his wife, Pagsanjan Mayor Girlie Ejercito. The couple finally found a new partner in their advocacy for the out-of-school youths – CLFI.

Mr. Victor Fedrigalan, representing Bureau of ALS (BALS) OIC Director Dr. Edel Carag, said that the CLC will be of great help to all ALS stakeholders and that it will “serve for skills development, livelihood, entrepreneurship, etc.”

Also present to grace the event were Ms. Florentina Pancap, Principal and ALS Consultant; Dr. Wilmer Gahite, District Supervisor; Mr. Rogelio F. Opulencia, Assistant Schools Superintendent; Dr. Diosdado San Antonio, Regional Director of Region IV-A; Dr. Orlando Valverde, ALS Education Program Supervisor; Mr. Dario; Ms. Muniz and Mr. Abelardo Aquino, Area Manager.
