Employees of CLAFI and ABU work with communities for Brigada Eskwela 2018

Pupils will now enjoy learning in a more conducive classroom as classes open on 4 June 2018.

In a public-private partnership, Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. (CLAFI) and Alcantara Group’s AgriBusiness Unit joined the teachers, parents and community members in preparing the classrooms of four schools in Sarangani Province and General Santos City in Brigada Eskwela 2018.

CLAFI is the corporate social responsibility arm of the Alcantara Group where ABU is a member.

More than a hundred employees from ABU and CLAFI cleaned, painted, repaired armchairs & classrooms of Maribulan Elementary School in Alabel and PH Millona Integrated School in Malapatan, Sarangani Province, and Banwalan IP School in General Santos City. The floor of the kindergarten room in Calay IP School in Malapatan, Sarangani Province was also cemented.

“Alayon para sa Brigada Eskwela Uban ang komunidad is the brainchild of ABU Vice President for Operations Miguel Rene Dominguez to work with stakeholders prepare schools for the upcoming school year. We also want to contribute to the communities, and the idea is to tap employees of the Agribusiness Unit, with CLAFI, to do the painting, cleaning and repairing themselves, on top of providing painting, finishing and flooring materials. Employee-volunteers are from both the operations and administration, from Finfish Hatcheries, Inc., SACI, Alsons Aquaculture, AlsonsDev – Banana, and SCCI – Banana,” explained Mr. Ray Cadorna, Employee Relations Head of the ABU.

Grateful for the new look of her classroom, Ma’am Armie Paloma, Grade 4 Adviser of PH Millona Integrated School, said the newly-repainted rooms will definitely excite her pupils and improve their learning. Ma’am Paloma is hopeful ABU and CLAFI will continue to assist the school.

“We are considering making this an annual company event with more schools and more participation from employees,” said Mr. Cadorna.
